Dr. Tim Gray is a General Cardiologist with a subspecialist interest in coronary angiography and angioplasty with stents
He is one of very few interventional Cardiologists who is skilled and trained to undertake the most complex coronary interventions including chronically occluded arteries with over 15 years experience as a Consultant.
Tim Gray works within the NHS for the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust and works across Oldham, Rochdale and Bury. He has private clinics at The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale and Spire Manchester Hospital in Didsbury. He has admitting rights to The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle. Tim Gray has also now started consulting at Enigma Healthcare in Tarporley, Cheshire.
Having successfully secured a place at St John’s College Cambridge, he then spent the next 6 years in Cambridge where he successfully achieved a 2:1 in medicine and subsequently qualified as a doctor at Addenbrookes Medical School. During his time in Cambridge he rowed for Lady Margaret Boat Club, rowing in the first crew including at 2 Henley Regattas. He stayed on in the Cambridge area to complete his preregistration “house jobs” before moving down to Southampton to complete 2 years of general medical training as a Senior House Officer. He experienced a number of medical specialities before realising his ambition to be a Cardiologist and from there headed back to Cambridge and Papworth Hospital to undertake research into chronic angina and the technique of laser revascularisation of the heart. From here, he headed North to Manchester where he has lived ever since, completing 6 years of specialist training in Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary and subsequently securing his NHS Consultant post at Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust.
As a new Consultant he quickly became Cardiac Catheter Lab Clinical Lead, and took on the task of fully equipping the catheter laboratory with all the necessary equipment to investigate and treat all patients requiring coronary artery angiography and stenting. This included the procurement of Pressure wire (FFR) assessment, and coronary imaging techniques of Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). He was the sole operator qualified for the use of rotational atherectomy (coronary rotablation) to treat heavily calcified coronary arteries and remains one of the highest volume operators in Manchester. He is also trained and regularly uses intracoronary lithotripsy for calcified coronary lesions. He also started the local CTO (chronic total occlusion) programme, working with local proctors to learn the highly specialised techniques required to re-open completely blocked coronary arteries – traditionally only treated by open heart surgery. He remains the only operator in the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust who undertakes these procedures and one of very few in the North West of England.
Dr Gray undertakes the most complex types of coronary intervention including opening chronically occluded arteries and he is confident in the use of a wide range of technologies to investigate and treat coronary artery disease – one of just a handful of operators locally. He is fully trained and skilling in the most advanced and complex techniques including rotablation to drill out heavily calcified and blocked arteries. Very few interventional cardiologists are able to undertake all of these procedures.
As well as my interest in treating coronary artery disease, he maintains a full and balanced cardiology practice with inpatients treated both on the NHS and privately with all types of cardiological conditions as well as seeing unselected general cardiology patients in clinic again both on the NHS and privately. He runs 2 clinics a week on the NHS and 3 clinics privately.
For several years he held a variety of management roles on the NHS working up from Clinical Director to Divisional Clinical Director to Medical Director for Bury Care Organisation, but in the end he decided that the management roles meant that he was not able to spend enough time with his patients and he decided to drop these roles and concentrate on clinical care. He enjoys all his clinical work and interactions with patients so continues to participate in all aspects of Cardiology both on the NHS and through private practice. He enjoys practicing what he believes to be the highest quality, patient centric clinical care and believes in a strong and robust governance process, so continues to act as the governance lead for cardiology on the NHS. He is also the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) lead for Cardiology for Spire Manchester Hospital.
Outside of work, Dr Gray is a fanatical cyclist, enjoys snowboarding, sailing, and the great outdoors.
